Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U)

I wanted to finish up Returns first before diving into this game, but I decide, screw it, I'll just fire this puppy up anyway. And man, am I ever glad I did. As much as I enjoyed Returns, I think I have to say at Tropical Freeze is the better game. I do wish I wasn't regulated to DK in single player but the added abilities of the other Kongs grant me are a tremendous asset, even if I have grown far too dependent on them. Having Dixie's twirling hair for extra hang time makes me realize how much I've missed her. Cranky Kong long sits on the sidelines and while I do miss his hilarious chatter, he does a great Scrooge McDuck pogocane impression.

The levels are a marvel to look at. Once could argue that from a visual standpoint that it's only a touched up version of Returns, but Tropical Freeze's environments are still nonetheless jaw dropping. The Lion King inspired level in World 2 had me stopping to take in the scenery on multiple occasions.

The difficulty is on par with Returns from what I've played thus far. I'm a little ways into World 3 and I dread anytime I have to jump on a mine cart. There was one level in world 1, I believe where the level was being created as I was riding the mine cart. Collecting KONG letters in mine cart levels are the worst because you almost always have to flirt with death to get one or more of them.

I cannot praise the music enough in Tropical Freeze. As I said in the latest version of Favorite Tunes, I liked Kenji Yamamoto's work on Returns but I am LOVING the compositions David Wise wrote for Tropical Freeze. I didn't mind screwing up my first attempt on World 1's boss because it allowed me to hear that rocking battle theme one more time. Nintendo will probably release a soundtrack for Tropical Freeze for Club Nintendo members. In Japan, of course.

If I were to compare the three platformers I've been playing on the Wii U thus far between Super Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros. U and Tropical Freeze, I'd have to say that 3D World is the best of the lot, but Tropical Freeze is still a solid romp. Whenever I'm at work, I can't wait to finish up so I can go home and plow through a few levels, which for me, is an indicator that you've got a game that is more than just good.

Kid Icarus: Uprising (3DS)

I picked this up around Christmas time in 2012. I have no idea why I waited so long to start playing this as it really is a shinning example of why the 3DS is the best thing to be gaming on right now. Being a game developed by Masahiro Sakurai, Uprising has controls that only use a few buttons and as a result, is super simple to play. For the most part. In the air, the game controls so fluidly. On the ground, the controls aren't terrible by any means but Pit doesn't move with the same grace he as most characters in third person action games. Turning pit around can be a pain at times, especially when under attack by enemies from behind.

Only four chapters in and I am already loving the characters and voice work in this game. Pit is a brave, if brash, naive hero under the guidance of Paluntena, who, despite her goddess status, isn't above having fun at Pit's expense. Getting Cree Summer to voice Medusa? The casting director is a genius.

Uprising also has plenty of nods to the games that came before it. The Grim Reaper, one of the most annoying foes from the first Kid Icarus returns and acts just as he did in the original game, going insane upon being attacked. Even the music that plays when striking the Grim Reaper plays, much to my great annoyance.

Code of Princess (3DS)

Another game that I had sitting on the shelf, unopened for quite some time. But this one didn't stay sealed for a year or more, so, hey, that's something, right? Right? I've never played the original Guardian Heroes but from what I hear, this game can be seen as a spiritual successor to it. There are loads of characters but my favorites are Solange and Ali. Solange for her strength and Ali for her speed. Speaking of the characters, the lot is in this game are a very likable bunch.  Despite her less than modest attire, Solange is herself a very humble, kindhearted princess. The voice work is also very well done and has me looking forward to the dialogue in between battles just to see how the characters will interact with each other.

Still Playing: Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS), Super Mario 3D World (Wii U)

Latest Purchases #42

My vacation pay came and sadly it wasn't even close to what I thought it would be so I wasn't able to get everything I wanted. I'm bummed about that but in the end, I ended up spending a fair amount of it on my wonderful nieces and nephew for Christmas gifts. What did I get them? You'll find out on December 25. Until then, check out the first batch of things I treated myself to.

You can never have enough blankets to keep you warm and you can never have enough Mario blankets. So here's my second Super Mario Bros. blanket with Mario and Luigi to keep me warm. I picked this up at fye, on sale for less than $11 and with my 10% discount, I paid even less. The original price was $21.99.

The Last Story finally hit American retailers back in July. I'm late picking it up but Best Buy had it for $40. I'm not sure if the price dropped on the game or what but they only had a few copies left so I was gonna make one of them mine. I love the special packaging of this game. A huge thanks to Operation Rainfall for helping to get this game published outside of Japan and thanks to Xseed for taking up the publishing duties.

I love the original Pikmin and I never got around to picking up Pikmin 2 on the GCN. I wouldn't mind having a GCN copy of Pikmin 2 but I'm not gonna go out of my way to hunt one down. Besides, I hear it's one of the more pricey GCN games so I'll stick with the motion controlled version of Pikmin 2 on the Wii. It'll be fun to explore with Olimar and the Pikmin again. And with no time limit!

I picked up The Dark Knight Rises DVD + BluRay + Ultra Violet edition at fye on release day. But when I went into Best Buy they had the whole Dark Knight Trilogy on sale for the same price I paid for the single copy of the Dark Knight Rises. I didn't expect to find the trilogy so cheap, so I picked up the DVD version of it and gave the DVD + BluRay + Ultra Violet version to my dad. He's a hard working gent that doesn't treat himself nearly enough.

And this makes my second time buying Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This is one of the Wii's dual layered discs. These kinds of games can have problems after extended use with Brawl being the biggest culprit. I haven't played Brawl in months because of this and I really don't want to have to get another version of the game. I'm hoping gamers don't have similar problems on Wii U games. I really missed playing Brawl so it's great to have a working copy again.

One of the 3DS' most anticipated games and the comeback of a Nintendo star, Kid Icarus: Uprising has finally been added to my collection of 3DS games. I wondered why it came it such a box that was bigger than normal 3DS games. That's because it includes a 3DS stand. I'm guessing this is a game that can be difficult to play when holding the 3DS in your hands. I'm still not fond of paying $40 for 3DS games so I'm glad I got 10% off this baby at fye.

This month marks Final Fantasy's 25th anniversary  I thought I'd celebrate by picking up the 25th anniversary game, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. I've always adored the music from Final Fantasy so a game based solely around the music. I wonder if it gets as frantic as Elite Beat Agents.

With Paper Mario: Sticker Star, I have all the Paper Mario games. Some have complained about the sticker system of the game. Everything depends on stickers so if you run out, you're pretty much screwed. It won't be the first time I've played an RPG with limited battle items. One of my favorite GBA games Riviera: The Promise Land only let you take a very limited amount of items into each battle so you had to really think about what you'd use. Intelligent Systems has always had a special knack for making each Paper Mario entry feel different from one another so I want to see for myself what they've done with Sticker Star.

I already have a nice blue beanie to keep my head warm during the winter but a Goomba Laplander Beanie? No I did not have one of those. Until now. fye only had one of these left and I had to have it. It keeps my head warm and it looks sooooo cool! I mean, the Goomba is a PERFECT design for a beanie! The Goomba may very well be gaming's most easily disposable mook but he makes one heck of a beanie. I love it!

Send in the Clones!

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I also think it's the sincerest form of obsession and like Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, even the gaming world is filled with copies and look-a-likes. Don't worry, this isn't yet another bash on the Star Wars prequels (there's way too many of those as it is). No, I'm here to talk about video game character clones. Because if you can't beat 'em, copy 'em!

Mecha Bomber - Super Bomberman (SNES)

Black Bomberman gets abducted by Carat Diamond and Dr. Mook and his schematics are used to create an army of Mecha Bomber robots. They lack the more joyful look of regular Bomberman bots and have eye expressions that make them look downright evil. These fake Bombermen are also much more durable than the originals, able to sustain a heavy dose of damage before they can be eradicated. Just like the original Bombermen, these not-so-cheap knockoffs have an endless supply of bombs at their disposal. The Mecha Bombers are certainly some of the better bunch of clones in the gaming world. You may not remember Diamond and Mook, but you won't soon forget their sinister Mecha Bomber creations.

Les Enfants Terribles - Metal Gear Series (Various Platforms)

That's The Terrible Children for those of you that don't speak French. There is one highly convoluted back story behind the birth of these clones, so I'm gonna give you the abridged version. Big Boss was the world's best soldier but after being exposed to radiation for a second time, he was unable to produce offspring. Not wanting to let his legacy end with him and make sure the USA always had the best manpower, the government set out create clones of Big Boss with some heavy tampering involved. Three successful clones were made in total: Liquid Snake, Solidus Snake and Solid Snake. Liquid Snake believed he was given inferior genes and that Solid was given the superior genes, when in fact, the reverse was true. Liquid ended up resenting Solid because of this so he has issues. Serious issues. Solidus wound up becoming the figurehead of the world as the President of the United States and a terrible adoptive father to Raiden and Solid Snake, the most normal of the trio choose to fight for freedom, protecting the world time and time again. Each of the clones is highly intelligent and are experts at hand-to-hand combat, making them the best soldiers the world has ever known. Sounds like they got a good deal, right? Remember that tampering I mentioned earlier? Each clone was design with accelerated aging should they turn on their creators or fall into enemy hands. By the time Solid Snake is 42 years old, he looks like he's in his 80s and only has a year at best to live out his final days. Bummer.

SA-X - Metroid Fusion (GBA)

Tap, tap, tap, tap, tap. Do you know what that sound is? That's the sound of your doom slowly approaching. When returning from a mission, Samus is infected by the X Parasite, a creature that duplicates the host's physical appearance, memories and proceeds to terminate them after. The federation manages to save Samus' life with a vaccine the from Metroid hatchling from Super Metroid but the X Parasite's one weakness, the Metroids, have all been whipped out. To make matters even worse, when the X Parasite infected Samus, her power suit was at full power, meaning the SA-X has access to all of Samus abilities. When Samus is given her new mission, she's pretty much naked with a bare bones power suit. Oh dear. When I heard the background music dim and heard those footsteps, my heart was filled with dread. Playing Metroid Fusion and being confronted with the SA-X is one of the few times in gaming I've been legitimately frightened. Throughout most of the game, you are not match for the SA-X and you have to flee for your life until you're strong enough to take it out. And those eyes! Those horrible, soulless eyes! I Believe Question said it best in an episode of Justice League Unlimited. "Looking into those eyes was like looking into an empty pit."

Cosmic Clones - Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land (Wii, 3DS)

Nothing is more aggravating than trying to make your way through a level and having these little snots shadow you the whole way. They mimic your every move and have the most grating voice, very similar to Bowser Jr, a character I wholeheartedly despise. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, they come in groups and can make tricky galaxy stars all the more frustrating. In Super Mario 3D Land you only get pursued by a single Cosmic Clone but sometimes these things pull a "Magic wand, make my monster grow!" At least in 3D Land they can be killed with a Starman which is oh-so satisfying.

Dark Link - Legend of Zelda Series (Various Platforms)

You think you're hot stuff because you got a ton of achievements on (insert modern game here)? Just getting to the Great Palace in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link was bragging rights. It's like all those stories your grandpa told you about walking to school in 90 degree below blizzards, except they were all true. And when you reached the boss chamber, your own shadow jumps off of you and starts attacking. Wait, what? Yeah, it turns out Dark Link, your doppelganger is an even bigger threat than all the bosses you've faced thus far. Performing open heart surgery for the first time blindfolded is easier thank defeating Dark Link the fair way. The suicide rate probably skyrocketed when Zelda II was released. In 1998 players are struggling with the agony that is the Water Temple. "This dungeon can't possibly get any worse," you're thinking to yourself. And then the middle boss shows up. Guess who's back? I wonder, how many F bombs were shouted when gamers saw Dark Link again. As technology improved, Dark Link looked even creepier the more games he appeared in. It's becoming increasingly clear that as long as there are Zelda games, Dark Link will always be around to send shivers down our spines.

Sonic Robot Copies - Sonic Series (Various Platforms)

Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman if you must) has made some sinister creations, but by far, the doc's best work are the robot copies of the blue hedgehog he's tried so hard to kill over the last 21 years. First there was Silver Sonic (Sonic 2 on the Game Gear and Genesis) who looked intimidating at first but was quite easy to beat once you figured out his predictable pattern. Then there was Metal Sonic, the most well-known robot copy who kidnapped Amy Rose in his debut appearance in Sonic CD. Already I love this guy. Finally, there was Mecha Sonic, who was Knuckles final foe in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and in a surprising turn of events could use the Master Emerald to transform into a super form like Sonic. Metal Sonic is my favorite of the lot, but I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Silver and Mecha Sonic make a much deserved comeback.

Gogo - Final Fantasy V-VI (SNES, PSX, GBA)

After the Apocalypse in Final Fantasy VI, a creature called Zone Eater can be found in the World of Ruin. Let Zone Eater inhale you and you'll see that it's quite spacey on the inside. A bit or roaming about and you'll find Gogo. Whether Gogo is a man, a woman, or human at all still remains a mystery to this day but what really matters is the skills that Gogo brings to the table. Gogo's specializes in mimicry. Gogo has the uncanny ability to copy whatever attack the previous party member used for the cost of nada. That's a pretty sweet but one could argue that it was done even better in Final Fantasy V. If you sought him out and defeated him, Gogo would award you with the Mime class, one of the best Jobs in the game. You could have one party member with the Gil Toss ability equipped and have three other party members use Gil Toss at the expense of just one dose of Gil. That's just a small example of how useful Gogo can be. Sure Gogo may not be as direct a clone as others mentioned here, but his Mime skill is the perfect embodiment of a clone.

Copy X - Mega Man Zero Series (GBA)

Neo Arcadia was the long awaited peace between humans and robots that Dr. Light dreamed of. It was ruled by his own creation, Mega Man X. But X sacrificed his own body to seal the Dark Elf. Not wanting Neo Arcadia to fall apart, Ceil built Copy X to rule in X's stead. While Ceil had good intentions, things did not go as planned and Copy X eventually became the new big bad to terrorize the land. In his own words, Copy X is a perfect copy of the original X. Except you know, Copy X is evil. He thinks he's never wrong and is very quick to act violently. Things got so bad that Zero was awoken from his long slumber to kill Copy X because the resistance couldn't handle him. X's ending to Mega Man X4 showed him worrying about the possibility of him going maverick and asking Zero to destroy him should that ever happened. The original X didn't go maverick but Copy X sure did so in a way, X's fears came true and like he asked, Zero took care of things for his old friend.

Omega - Mega Man Zero 3 (GBA)

Dr. Weil's finest creation, Omega starts out looking like a giant mech but once the armor comes off, he looks like a carbon copy of Zero (but with red eyes so we know he's evil). In actuality, Omega posses Zero's original body. So in other words, the Zero body that the player has been using is a facsimile. Long story short, sometime before the events of the first Mega Man Zero began, original Zero's soul was transferred into a duplicate body while Omega occupied Zero's original body. Weil drops this bombshell on Zero, much to the player's shock. Killing Omega, means destroying Zero's original body. X appears telling Zero what makes Zero who he is, his heart, his soul is what counts, so Zero goes ahead and kills Omega anyway.

Dark Pit - Kid Icarus Uprising (3DS)

You might think that with a name like Dark Pit that he'd be the big bad or at least the dragon, sent to wreak havoc and destruction. Yes, you fight him on more than one occasion and he has that classic bad boy air about him, but Dark Pit is actually an ally and a very well-rounded character. He has a strong sense of justice, doesn't believe in blind loyalty and isn't afraid to call the gods out on their actions. Born from the Mirror of Truth, Dark Pit may be a physical manifestation of Pit's inner feelings. Whatever the case, he's one of best "clones" in gaming as fan response to him as been overwhelmingly positive.

Game Art #31: Kid Icarus Gallery

In honor of Pit's big comeback with the release of Kid Icarus Uprising on the 3DS, here's a Game Art specifically for everyone's favorite angel. I haven't picked up a copy yet so for those of you that have played it, how are you liking it?
