Downloads #26: $30 eShop Credit Edition

I picked up Shin Magami Tensai IV and Fire Emblem: Awakening mainly so I could take advantage of this great offer that Nintendo laid out. There are a TON of great games for purchase on the eShop. Game Boy games, Game Gear games, original titles and fully downloadably 3DS games. The eShop is yet another reason why the 3DS rocks. If you haven't done so, I highly recommend nabbing the two 3DS games to take advantage of this offer before August 31st. Here's what I got with my $30.

Pushmo (3DS)

Developed by Intelligent systems, this is a game I've wanted for some time. I believe it dropped in price because I'm pretty sure it was higher than the $6.99 I bought it for. I'm sure everyone is trucking away on the sequel, Crashmo, but I've always been fond of starting from the beginning, so I'll pick up Crashmo later on. Looking forward to trying out those player created puzzles.

Shantae (GBC)

Trying to pick up a physical copy of this game will bleed you dry. I'm ever so thankfully that it can be bought on the eShop for chump change. Since this game was made by WayForward and has a soundtrack by Jake Kaufman, I'm sure I'll love it.

GG Shinobi (GG)

I'm a big fan of SEGA's Shinobi series. You may think this one isn't worth your time because it's on the Game Gear, but this is actually a pretty competent game and one of the best GG games that SEGA has put on the eShop.

Mega Man 4 (NES)

One of my favorite Mega Man games, I love the Robot Masters and the whole Russian vibe that Dr. Cossack brings to the game. And I also like the Mega Buster. What I don't like is the sound it makes, screwing up the music. Fans like to call the Mega Buster a game break but they don't say a thing about the Metal Blades in Mega Man 2. Fandom. Feh.

Mega Man 5 (NES)

Lots of people feel the series started to go downhill with this entry but I still find Mega Man 5 enjoyable. The finally fixed that Mega Buster charge noise in this game!

Mega Man 6 (NES)

The Robot Master weapons are some of the worst ever and I don't find the music in this game anywhere near as memorable as the prequels or games after it. That said, I can still get some kicks out of Mega Man 6. The Rush adapters pretty sweet and they were combined into one of the best items in Mega Man 7.

Life and Times in Gamerock Entry 4

Gamerock continues to be the ever prosperous town, but some changes have been made.

Much as I love the Night Owl ordinance, I had it removed in favor of the Bell Boom. Things now cost more, but on the flip side, things can be sold at a higher rate. This makes paying off that fiend Tom Nook a bit easier as well as completing public work projects.

I don't turn down help. Actually following
up on every request, however...
The the word of Neo, "WHOA!"
Reggie had Cyrus do some custom work
on his Exotic Bed.
Cooper, your first order of business is to
throw that ape in the red shirt out of
town ASAP!

Speaking of public works projects, I've completed quite a few more! Town Hall has been renovated and given a new Russian-esque look. It's taken some time but the color scheme has started to grown on me.

One of the townsfolk dropped the suggestion of  Police Station some time ago so I finally had one built. I went with the Modern Police Station since it strongly resembles the one from the original Animal Crossing. Sadly, Cooper is the only police dog on the force and the unsure Booker is absent. Turns out Booker comes with the Classic Police Station. Don't get me wrong, I like Cooper and his confidence but Booker really helped balance things out.

The town also has it's very own cafe in the form of the Roost, run by none other than Brewster. I can sit down every day or night since it's open 24 hours and have a cup of coffee. Even better I can have coffee to go since Brewster offers take out now. Occasionally, the citizens that work on Main Street will stop in for coffee once work is done and I can talk with them. Thus far, Kicks has come in and he's told me a bit about his past.

This past Sunday was the first of the Fireworks Festival. Starting at 7PM, the sky is lit up with fireworks that can be seen at any point in town. It's quite the lovely site and just about everyone in town was outside their homes to enjoy the show. I even got some gifts after paying Crazy Redd 500 coins a pop for a few fortune  cookies supplied by Timmy and Tommy Nook. Isabelle even handed out some fireworks for me to set on the ground and watch go off. She also gave me some literally flash headgear to wear to mark the occasion. It was nice to see her out of Town Hall having fun.

Lyle, you're a lying liar who lies.
He's still alive, sadly.
How could you tell?

I've really gotten into custom items that Cyrus makes. Among other things, I had him turn my Pink Game Shelf into a Black Game Shelf, complete with a Silver GameCube.

Muffy damiiring my work on the organ.
Um, sorry?

I also ventured out into other homes through Happy Home Academy and was surprised to see a Mii that looked like Nintendo of America's President, Reggie Files Aime. Sure enough, it was the man himself. A spot pass was sent out so that everyone that plays New Leaf can check out his home, but I found out about it the old fashioned way. So I went into his house and picked up a few things like a Ninja Sword. He's got a pretty nice place and has all the Nintendo items.

Reggie's home wasn't the only place I took a visit to. The numerous houses I've come across enabled me to extended my catalog greatly. I have nearly all of the items in the Astro series thanks to a few people and I've gotten some ideas for my personal exhibits at my Museum.

Favorite Tunes #65: Fear Factory

Gears, chains, crushers. The factory or industrial levels make for some pretty interesting stages in gaming as well as some of the most dangerous. Given the nature of these levels, they tend to be reserved for the end or near end of most games. Can you imagine if your first level was something like Scrap Brain Zone? Yeesh. Anyhoo, factory stages take center stage in this edition of Favorite Tunes.

Fear Factory - Donkey Kong Country (SNES)

Donkey and Diddy's long trek through DK Isle leads them to Oil Drum Alley, which is industrial territory. The journey through the factory inspired stages is often remembered for the level tune that plays, which was named after the industrial metal band, Fear Factory. Donkey Kong Country is packed with solid music all around but Fear Factory really does rank among the game's stand out songs.

Scrap Brain Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog (GEN)

Some gamers (foolishly) believe Sonic games are all about speed. Of course speed has always been a key element to the Blue Blur's games, but at heart, the Sonic games are all about platforming. Try blasting through Scrap Brain Zone like you did Green Hill Zone and you'll die over and over again. Like Marble Zone, this death trap factory must be traveled with caution. This was a Zone where I always struggled to hang on to my rings and to this day, I still get edgy going through it. I do love this theme with those heavy drums.

Techno Factory - Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Wii)

The Kirby game that was eleven years in the making, Kirby's Return to Dream Land was worth the long wait. It actually dethroned Kirby Super Star as my number one favorite Kirby title. Egg Engines is the sixth world in the game and this is where things really get dicey. The second level of this world can lead to dozens of lost lives and game overs. Just ask the Runaway Guys and Brain Scratch Commentaries. My nieces and I have also endured a bit of suffering in this level.

The Devil's Lab - Final Fantasy VI (SNES)

Industrial music with a touch of creepiness. That's Devil's Lab for you. The SNES sound trip truly is a marvel. Of course it takes good hands, (or ears) to bring some good sound out of any musical device. Thankfully Nobou Uematsu was more than capable.

Junk Man Stage - Mega Man 7 (SNES)

Every game series has a black sheep and I guess Mega Man 7 is the odd game out in the classic series. Even so, it's still one of my favorite Mega Man games. Junk Man's stage has a fair bit of hidden items that can only be accessed using the Freeze Cracker to freeze the lava and the Thunder Bolt to turn on a set of lifts to reach areas you wouldn't be able to reach otherwise.

Frantic Factory - Donkey Kong 64 (N64)

I love the way this theme starts off. You hear the winding of a music box and once it's finished, you get this eerie theme that leads into Frantic Factory's main course, which is overall, a really creepy tune. If Dr. Frankenstein had his own demented toy factory, this would be the theme that plays.

Moody Clouds ~ The Meacha Factory - Rayman Origins (PS3, 360, Wii, Vita, 3DS)

Rayman Origins was a fantastic platform but it was no picnic. It rightfully earned it's place in the new Play Hard feature as one of the hardest platforms in the current generation of gaming. After you've overcome insane odds to make it to the final level, you have to escape a crumbling factory complex using all of Rayman's abilities he's acquired throughout the game. Failure means having to start the whole thing over again. Saying I died over 50 times is not exaggerating.

Greblin - Inside the Factory - Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (PS2)

I really wish I could say something about this game, but I haven't played it or any game in this series for that matter. Though I do own all of the PS2 games. I just haven't gotten around to playing them. That said, this is some sweet factory music.

Toad Factory - Mario Kart Wii (Wii)

Mario Kart Wii has a tendency for punishing you for doing well (if you can go through a GP race without being hit by that Blue Shell, you really got off lucky) but it's still another fun entry in the Mario Kart series. Toad Factory mat not be what you had in mind for a factory themed music, but then it isn't your typical factory race track.

Industrial - Command & Conquer (PC, PS, SAT)

Quite possibly my favorite song from the original Command & Conquer. It's amazing what the addition of an instrument can do to a song after hearing it loop a second time. The first time Industrial plays, the drums are absent but after it repeats, the drum beat kicks in, giving the song a slightly more aggressive feel.

Currently Playing #18

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS)

As a huge fan of the original Luigi's Mansion, I had great anticipation for Dark Moon. I've only played a few hours, but I've been loving what I've been seeing.

I was a bit worried about how Dark Moon's controls would handle. The first Luigi's Mansion used both analog sticks and the 3DS only has a single thumb pad and I have no intention of investing in that ridiculous Circle Pad Pro add on. Luckily Dark Moon controls just as smooth as the first game even with a single thumb pad. Moving Luigi around, catching ghosts, aiming the flash light and Poltergust 5000 is easy as pie.

I'm still on the first mansion, Gloomy Manor, but I really do love exploring each room I walk into. I check everything I can and I love how the game rewards your curiosity with hidden passages and gold. I find that searching every nook and cranny is just as satisfying as sucking up those bothersome ghosts.

Speaking of the ghouls, some of these guys are pretty clever. A few of the Greenie ghosts used pots and pans as weapons and to shield them from the shine of my flash light to keep from getting caught. Once their guard was down, I was able to shine the light on them, stun them and vacuum them up. Makes me wonder what the other ghosts are going to be like later down the road.

Luigi is just as cowardly and lovable in Dark Moon as he was in the original game, perhaps even more so. He hums and whistles to the excellent background music, calls out hello in a nervous voice when you press the directional pad and he walks through a room filled with ghosts with the teeth chattering courage.

F-Zero X (N64)

Recently, I downloaded this off the Wii's Virtual Console service. It's been more than 10 years since I've played this N64 racer. When I bought it back in 1999, I only had to part with $30. A digital version on the Virtual Console only set me back 1000 Wii points, or $10. I thought F-Zero X was a steal for $30 in 1999 and it's a steal today for $10.

Playing F-Zero X reminds me of my high school days. Blasting around insane courses against 29 other racers, going up against friends in split screen multiplayer, and killing other racers in Death Race, all at a smooth 60 frames per second. It still blows my mind that this game achieved such a feat. Keeping a consistent frame rate may not seem like that big a deal today but in 1998, this was very impressive stuff, especially on the N64, which is a cartridge based system.

My N64 cart version of F-Zero X has everything unlocked thanks to the cheat that unlocked everything. What can I say, I was quite the impatient fellow back then (still am in some ways) but it was nice to get easy access to the Joker and X Cup, the later of which generates randomized courses. This time, I'm seeing how far I can go unlocking things on my own.

Thus far I've beaten the first three cups on Standard, the lowest difficulty. Even a few narrow roads, sharp turns and big jumps didn't keep me from taking first place. Playing on Novice as Captain Falcon or any of the six default racers is pretty challenging. You have to fight to reach and keep first place the entire time. I was going through the Jack Cup as Captain Falcon and I was in danger of losing the cup to Mr. EAD. Mr. EAD has crappy stats but he managed to take first from me twice. One more loss to him would mean all my efforts would be for naught. So on Port Town, I decided it was time to start killing other racers and Mr. EAD was on my hit list. I couldn't remember what his machine looked like, so I just started going nuts with the spin attack and fortunately, I took him out.

Playing as Baba on Standard, one of the six racers I unlocked from clearing all the cups on Novice, the Queen Cup was a lot easier, probably due to Baba's superior speed over the initial six racers. Much as I like Falcon and Octoman, I have a much harder time on any Standard racing so I'll be going with Baba and other faster cars from here on out.
