Favorite Tunes #5: N64 Music

One of the most common complaints of the N64 was that the unit's audio processor wasn't on the same level as that of the PlayStaion or Saturn. Nintendo's decision to stick with the cartridge format when everyone else was moving to CDs came back to bite the video game giant in more ways than one. Even so, in the right hands (or in this case, ears) composers proved that quality sound on Nintendo's last cartridge-based console was not impossible. Some of my favorite video game songs are from The Big N's 64 bit baby, and not just from first and second party titles.

Mount Mayhem - Beetle Adventure Racing (N64)

If you never played Beetle Adventure Racing!, man, do I feel sorry for you. BAR! stood out in a sea of crappy racing games on the N64 thanks to it's lengthy, shortcut filled tracks, detailed graphics and fantastic music that was unlike anything heard on the system. Rather than rock out to guitars, BAR! floored the ears with a wave of loud drums and funk. The game was also quite challenging. Unlocking everything was far from easy but if you persevered, you could unlock the Police Car, which let you turn on a siren that made all the AI cars pull over and stop while you pass them by. How cooly broken is that?

Green Garden - Bomberman 64 (N64)

Bomberman is a series known primarily for it's multiplayer mode. When Bomberman 64 released, it brought with it one of the best and toughest single player experiences in Bomberman's history. Despite the new 3D graphics, the game still played from an overhead perspective, though you could adjust the camera to get views from different angles, a first for the series. The music was right on par with the SNES Bomerman games. Ironically, Bomberman 64 ended up having one of the weaker multiplayer modes. Go figure.

Area 51 - BattleTanx (N64)

3DO. A name that is synonymous with crappy games staring the Army Men figures. Back in December of 1999, my friends and I rented two N64 games. One of them was Army Men: Sarge's Heroes. Sweet merciful heavens, that game was awful! For the most part, I'd managed to avoid disastrous N64 releases but not that time. Just thinking about that turd of a game makes me shudder. The other game we rented was BattleTanx, which turned out to be decent. We had some fun driving around in tanks killing each other. Then we played on Area 51 and that track was forever stuck in my brain. It's so militaristic and pumping.

Simian Acres - Blast Corps (N64)

Finally a second party N64 game on the list. Blast Crops is one of the best games on the N64 and one of the greatest games Rare ever made. It was a every man's childhood dream come true. What kid didn't want to play with giant robots, trucks and cause all kinds of destruction? The story of Blast Crops goes like this: a truck carrying nukes cannot stop moving. If it hits anything, the world goes bye-bye. Your job is to clear a path for the truck. Yes, the story is that simple, but I get to wreck stuff, so it's good enough for me! Blast Corps was also unfathomably hard. Getting platinum medals was enough to strip even the sanest gamer of their sanity.

Blue Flame - 1080 Snowboarding (N64)

I remember picking up a copy of 1080 Snowboarding and playing it sometime in the early 2000s. This game had quite the learning curve, similar to that of Excitebike 64. If I went back to play this game, I'm sure I'd probably struggle with it because I didn't play it the same way I did Wave Race 64. And yet, it's still one of those sports games that I'd be more likely to play than a mainstream sports title like Madden.

The Sonic Stadium Music Album 2011

This just recently came to my attention so I thought I'd share it with you.

The Sonic Stadium Music Album 2011 is a fan arrangement project. Music represented here comes from numerous Sonic games such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic Rush, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and more.

At four digital discs, it's a lot of music to listen to. I haven't heard the full album because I've been busy with other things. However, I did listen to a few tracks and I can say that there's some good music in here. The Blue Blur and Palmtree Panic are certainly worth placing on your iPod. And of course, the album is a free download. You can listen to individual tracks on the download site.

DVD Pick-Ups #1

Gaming Rocks on is a blog reserved for gaming related posts but since I'm a huge cartoon and anime fan, I figured I could start sharing some of my DVD purchases here. Not all of these were purchased this week. Some of these I picked up weeks ago. I just decided to include the whole lot in one post.

I bought Batman: The Brave and the Bold Season One Part One and Season One Part Two last year. Still haven't gotten around to watching them yet. With Season Two Part One and Season Two Part Two in my collection, I now have 2/3 of the whole series. Batman: The Brave and the Bold is a fine addition to animated Batman lore. Don't let it's campy nature turn you away. Actually, the camp and over the top nature of the show is what makes it so great.

I only saw one episode of Wolverine and the X-Men but I did enjoy it. Despite the fact that Marvel is bent on whoring Wolverine out, I still think he's a cool comic character. Picking this up at Wal-Mart for $14.99 was the perfect chance for me to see the series in its entirety. In this cartoon, Wolverine is played by Steven Blum, one of the best voice actors in the business.

What do I know about Area 88? Well, I played the SNES game U.N. Squadron which has very little to do with the anime series so to answer my own question, not much. This was only $12.99 at fye and they were having a special where if you buy one used DVD you can get another for half off. So Area 88 The Complete Collection cost me less than $6.

My mom bought WALL-E for my nieces as a gift when we moved to Virginia Beach last year. I watched the movie so many times. WALL-E is one of my favorite Pixar films and one of my all-time favorite movies. Needless to say, it's great to finally have my own copy and the three disc special edition, too.

So I'm sure you can tell by looking at the picture that I'm a huge Dragon Ball Z fan. I mean, there's five DBZ sets in that image. I went with the FUNimation orange season box sets because I picked up season  one and two years ago. I was able to pick up seasons three to six for $17.99 each used at fye. So why didn't I just opt for the Dragon Box sets? Well those things are already pretty expensive, even on Amazon and I have doubts if I'd be able to secure all seven sets. On top of that, they don't have Bruce Faulconer's score, which I very much love and could care less what any "purist" thinks. That and I have to admit that I do like some DBZs extended run. Yeah, it was padded out like crazy but it still has it's charm. And then there's DBZ Kai, which is far more faithful to the manga. I decided to get this when I feel like watching a shorter version of DBZ. I started with DBZ Kai Part Seven because it was on sale. I watched subbed episodes of Kai a few years back and liked what I saw.

Unlock Everything in Battlefield 3 for $40

Love Battlefield 3 but don't want to go through all the hard working of unlocking all the cool stuff from long hours of playing? Well EA has the solution. They call it the Ultimate Shortcut Bundle. Just fork over $40 and you can unlock everything without even playing. I must say, that's a pretty expensive shortcut. If you don't want or need everything, EA is also releasing content in packs for less money.

Now I'm not really one to bring my own moral gaming codes into this because I've used cheats and other shortcuts to unlock characters, weapons and numerous things in certain games I've played. But I never had to spend $40 to get access to those goods. Outside of a cheat device like Action Replay, I've never had to spend money to unlock anything.

I realize that unlocking things in games takes time but giving a company money just to unlock stuff just wreaks of corporate greed. I can only wonder much much money EA will bring in from doing this. Battlefield 3 has already sold more than 10 million copes since it released in October of 2011, so there's plenty of gamers that own this title.

Capcom Defends on-Disc DLC

I don't mean to keep beating a dead horse but Capcom's audacity is just astounding on so many levels. This is Capcom's response to complaints from the Better Business Bureau regarding the 12 DLC characters in Street Fighter X Tekken.

"At Capcom, we value our customers and make every effort to resolve customer complaints. We are sorry to hear that [censored] was so disappointed with the Street Fighter x Tekken game (''SFxT''), and would like to respond to his complaints.

SFxT has an enormous amount of content, fully developed and available for play and enjoyment immediately on-disc. Given the 38 characters available for full play, as well as multiple play modes, SFxT provides great value for all players from day one. While Capcom is sorry that some of its fans are not happy about the chosen method of delivery for the DLC, we believe that this method will provide more flexible and efficient gameplay throughout the game's lifecycle. There is effectively no distinction between the DLC being ''locked'' behind the disc and available for unlocking at a later date, or being available through a full download at a later date, other than delivery mechanism.
We hope that this addresses [censored]' concerns."

HORSE. MANURE.

No difference? They are actually that thick-headed to believe that? There's a huge difference here! These characters were already good to go. Capcom just saw a chance to get some extra change and took it. And then they have the nerve to come out with that "we value our customers" PR garbage? The only thing Capcom values is the all mighty dollar.

DLC is usually used as an acronym for downloadable content. It can also be used as an acronym for disc locked content, which is far more fitting in this case. This certainly will not be the last time Capcom or another game company decides to screw over it's consumer base.

Videos I Like #10: Mario RPG: Rawest Forest

I moved into a new pad and due to internet being out, I was able to do any blog posts. Now that it's back up, my hiatus has ended. I've got some catching up to do so I'll start with another video post.

Do you love Super Mario RPG? Why am I even asking that? Of course you do. It's a great role playing game AND a great Mario game. It also has some splendid music. As if Yoko Shimomura's awesome Beware the Forest's Mushroom wasn't infectious enough, Martin Hagwell, aka Märta remixed it, giving it some hilariously catchy lyrics. Chris Niosi heard the remix and came up with an equally awesome flash video, dubbing it, Mario RPG: Rawest Forest. It's a fine tribute to one of my favorite Mario games and Yoko Shimomura's excellent music. I'd like to give a special thanks to my friend Tommy Wilson for directing me to this videos a few years back. It's been one of my favorites ever since. You can also download this song here.
