Have I been flooding the blog with too many Mega Man posts? You'll have to forgive me for that. It is little boy blue's 25th anniversary and all and with him being one of my favorite video game characters, well, I can't help but celebrate. But I'm taking a break from the festivities in this post to tell you about my latest downloads. The Mega Man posts will resume shortly.

1080 Snowboarding (N64)

I picked up a copy of 1080 Snowboarding in the early 2000s. I've never stepped on a snowboard in my life but all the good things I heard about this game prompted me to pick it up. I never did play much of it and this was mostly due to the steep learning curve with the controls. This game takes a lot of practice to get down and I never really committed myself to doing so. But Club Nintendo currently has the game for 150 coins until January 6. Despite doing poorly at the game all those years ago, I'd like to give it another shot and 150 coins beats 1000 Wii points.

Mario Party 2 (N64)

1080 Snowboarding was originally the only game I was going to mention but in the middle of making this post, I went to Club Nintendo's website and saw some more games going for 150 coins, Mario Party 2 being among them. I never did play any Mario Party beyond the original. Though I loved the first one, I was one of the many (along with my friends) that suffered from blisters on his hands from rotating the control stick in the mini games. I'm guessing that for this reason, the original Mario Party won't being seeing the light of day on the Virtual Console. I figured my nieces would want to play Mario Party 2, but I've always been wanting to get back into the series so yeah, I got the game for myself, too.

Mega Man X2 (SNES)

With this month being Mega Man's 25th anniversary, Blue Bomber fever is in full effect in my home. I've been writing up Mega Man articles, looking through my Mega Man Megamix & Gigamix manga and of course, playing a ton of Mega Man games. Mega Man X2 released on the Virtual Console earlier this year and I still think it's one of the best Mega Man games, though it isn't my favorite X game. Really looking forward to going through this game again. I'm hoping Capcom gives us the remaining SNES Mega Man games. Heck, I'd probably buy Mega Man Soccer if they released it.

Mega Man 5 (NES)

Certainly not the most popular Mega Man game, but still not a bad entry. Again, as part of Mega Man's 25th birthday, it only seemed right to add another digital Mega Man game to my collection. Despite what the critics say, I still Mega Man 5.

Star Fox 64 (N64)

It's been years since I played Star Fox 64, one of my favorite shooters and one of the N64's best games. For months I've been wanting to play through this game again and I really didn't want to plunk down $40 for Star Fox 64 3D. My N64 was misplaced during the move months back and I planned to add Star Fox 64 to my VC library anyway, so, here we are. Maybe I'll play through all the pathways legit this time. Years back I used Action Replay. What? Don't judge me.

Favorite Tunes #5: N64 Music

One of the most common complaints of the N64 was that the unit's audio processor wasn't on the same level as that of the PlayStaion or Saturn. Nintendo's decision to stick with the cartridge format when everyone else was moving to CDs came back to bite the video game giant in more ways than one. Even so, in the right hands (or in this case, ears) composers proved that quality sound on Nintendo's last cartridge-based console was not impossible. Some of my favorite video game songs are from The Big N's 64 bit baby, and not just from first and second party titles.

Mount Mayhem - Beetle Adventure Racing (N64)

If you never played Beetle Adventure Racing!, man, do I feel sorry for you. BAR! stood out in a sea of crappy racing games on the N64 thanks to it's lengthy, shortcut filled tracks, detailed graphics and fantastic music that was unlike anything heard on the system. Rather than rock out to guitars, BAR! floored the ears with a wave of loud drums and funk. The game was also quite challenging. Unlocking everything was far from easy but if you persevered, you could unlock the Police Car, which let you turn on a siren that made all the AI cars pull over and stop while you pass them by. How cooly broken is that?

Green Garden - Bomberman 64 (N64)

Bomberman is a series known primarily for it's multiplayer mode. When Bomberman 64 released, it brought with it one of the best and toughest single player experiences in Bomberman's history. Despite the new 3D graphics, the game still played from an overhead perspective, though you could adjust the camera to get views from different angles, a first for the series. The music was right on par with the SNES Bomerman games. Ironically, Bomberman 64 ended up having one of the weaker multiplayer modes. Go figure.

Area 51 - BattleTanx (N64)

3DO. A name that is synonymous with crappy games staring the Army Men figures. Back in December of 1999, my friends and I rented two N64 games. One of them was Army Men: Sarge's Heroes. Sweet merciful heavens, that game was awful! For the most part, I'd managed to avoid disastrous N64 releases but not that time. Just thinking about that turd of a game makes me shudder. The other game we rented was BattleTanx, which turned out to be decent. We had some fun driving around in tanks killing each other. Then we played on Area 51 and that track was forever stuck in my brain. It's so militaristic and pumping.

Simian Acres - Blast Corps (N64)

Finally a second party N64 game on the list. Blast Crops is one of the best games on the N64 and one of the greatest games Rare ever made. It was a every man's childhood dream come true. What kid didn't want to play with giant robots, trucks and cause all kinds of destruction? The story of Blast Crops goes like this: a truck carrying nukes cannot stop moving. If it hits anything, the world goes bye-bye. Your job is to clear a path for the truck. Yes, the story is that simple, but I get to wreck stuff, so it's good enough for me! Blast Corps was also unfathomably hard. Getting platinum medals was enough to strip even the sanest gamer of their sanity.

Blue Flame - 1080 Snowboarding (N64)

I remember picking up a copy of 1080 Snowboarding and playing it sometime in the early 2000s. This game had quite the learning curve, similar to that of Excitebike 64. If I went back to play this game, I'm sure I'd probably struggle with it because I didn't play it the same way I did Wave Race 64. And yet, it's still one of those sports games that I'd be more likely to play than a mainstream sports title like Madden.

Mario Tennis (N64)
When Mario Tennis first hit the Nintendo 64 back in later 2000, it was a very big deal for my friends and me. The game actually made us stop playing Perfect Dark and engage in some very heated multiplayer doubles matches. It was so much fun keeping a volley going and then finally smashing that sucker to score some points. The loads of characters to choose from were a delight to play as. This is also the game that introduced, Waluigi, Wario's brother and Luigi's "evil" counterpart, a character I honestly feel is underrated. Waluigi was one of my favorite characters to play as because he had insane reach, which made him ideal for working the net. Alas, friends are a bit harder to come by so it could be a while before I get to enjoy those awesome doubles matches with human players once more.

Zombies At My Neighbors (SNES)
I once owned a complete copy of Zombies Ate My Neighbors on the Genesis that I stupidly traded in. Wanna hear the real kicker? I got that game for free from a co-worker. When I think back on things like that, it makes me glad I don't really do trading anymore. Anyhoo, my fellow forumites were talking this game up something fierce when it released for the Virtual Console some time ago. Wanting to get a game I've never played before (yeah, even when I had the game, I never played it), I decided to part with 800 Wii points and pick it up. From the looks of things, it looks like one of those games where anything that isn't a power-up wants your head. Sounds hard, but fun. Should be fun to take this one for a spin. And yes, the acronym for Zombies At My Neighbors is one of the best ever. ZAMN!
