VG Soundtrack of the Day 033: G-Darius

Of the Darius games I've played (which admittedly isn't a whole lot), G-Darius is my favorite. It has a sweet capture mechanic that lets you turn regular mooks and even mini bosses to your side to use as a power-up and those tug-o-war beam battles still get me hyped. And then there's that soundtrack. Being a Taito game means the ZUNTATA name is attached. There's some experimental tracks here and that may leave some scratching their heads but on the whole, this is another outstanding effort from ZUNTATA.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 032: Mega Man X

The first spin-off in the Mega Man series, Mega Man X has often been viewed as a darker, edgier version of the classic games. Even the music reflects a tone that is different from that of the original Blue Bomber, with a greater emphasis on rock and hard rock. Mega Man X is easily one of my favorite games in the entire franchise and the soundtrack more than the lives up to the exceptionally high standards set by the classic series.

You can play Undertale on just about anything these days. Toby Fox's indie mega hit has an absolutely splendid soundtrack that finds so many ways to arrange the game's main theme. VG Soundtrack of the Day 030: Super Castlevania IV

The SNES brought a lot to the table for Konami's vampire slaying action/platform series. Slight influence over Simon's jump. Multi directional whip attacks, which made dealing with certain enemies so much easier. And of course, dat soundtrack. Fan favorites such as Vampire Killer, Beginning, and Blood Tears have amazing 16-bit remixes. Then you've got the wealth of new music such as Simon's Theme, Demon Forest, Room of Close Associates, the list goes on and on. Super Castlevania IV is a challenging game but the frustration factor is greatly reduced compared to the NES titles, making it a excellent starting point for those looking to get into the Castlevania series. Video game music on vinyl has become more of a thing over the years and in 2017, Super Castlevania IV got this treatment. I don't do vinyl but there are some I would pick up for display purposes and this would certainly be one of them.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 029: Tekken 2

My introduction to the Tekken series via the PlayStation port of the arcade game, Tekken 2 is a bit slow and floaty compared to the games that followed it but some would argue that the PS soundtrack is some of, if not the best Tekken beats. Tekken 7, the latest entry has some good music to be sure, but a lot of it is on the club/rave side. By comparison, Tekken 2 is more varied with more calming music. Sure, it knows when to be loud but not too noisy.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 028: FINAL FANTASY IV Original Soundtrack

The first 16-bit entry in Square Enix's mega popular RPG series, FINAL FANTASY IV exploded onto the SNES in 1991. At the time, it was the most ambitious FF game, introducing the Active Time Battle system, a developed cast of characters, a plot that spread across Earth and the Moon and one of the best game soundtracks of the era. Nobuo Uematsu knocked it out of the park with FFIV's score. The Main Theme for this game is my favorite of the entire series and it gets arranged in other themes numerous times. Fight 2 is a big fan favorite (shoulda been in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or a remixed version of it) as is The Dreadful Fight (also known as Battle with the Four Fiends). It isn't just the battle music that makes FFIV's soundtrack so spectacular. Even the more relaxed themes like Welcome to Our Town! and Troian Beauty are stand out tunes, the later of which is absolute audio bliss. In case I haven't made it clear, I LOVE FFIV's soundtrack.

VG Soundtrack of the Day #27: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Originally released in 2014, the updated version, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe hit the Switch in 2017 and continues to be a big seller for the system. The soundtrack was already phenomenal in 2014, getting better and better with two paid DLC packs. Deluxe adds a proper battle mode (something sorely missing from the 2014 version) and a few more cool beats to highly memorable soundtrack.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 026: Thunder Force III

When you see the Technosoft name, you are in for some amazingly awesome video game jams. SEGA now owns the rights to the company's IPs, which is why we've seen Thunder Force IV (Lightening Force in America) released under the SEGA AGES line for the Switch and Thunder Force AC should be hitting the Switch sometime soon (game was announced forever ago). Usually arcade games come home but Thunder Force AC is a special case. The game is a modified version of Thunder Force III, which was first on the Genesis and the soundtrack is soooooo incredible. There isn't s single sub par tune in Thunder Force III. From the level themes, boss tunes, staff role, Thunder Force III's audio shines from start to finish.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 025: Yoshi's Island

Originally a sequel to Super Mario World under the long title Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, it was later categorized as the first game in the Yoshi platform series. For some, Yoshi's Island is still the best Yoshi game. I think I prefer Yoshi's Woolly World over it, but Yoshi's Island is still an amazing game. Yoshi's Island's soundtrack was scored by none other than Koji Kondo. In this soundtrack you can hear what would become the standard new version of the Starman/Super Star theme. There's a hefty amount of happy go lucky music with themes like Flower Garden, Athletic, and Overworld Theme. The three boss themes are all really good but if I had to pick a favorite, of the three, it would be Baby Bowser, hands down. A rock theme for a final battle jam may seem like something out of left field but Bowser also had a rock piece in Super Mario World.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 024: Bionic Commando Rearmed

Capcom's Bionic Commando series had a bit of a revival on the PS3 and 360. I never did play Bionic Commando Rearmed but the soundtrack is all kinds of aces. If you played Bionic Commando on the NES or heard that game's soundtrack, you'll be pleased to know that Bionic Commando Rearmed has some fantastic arrangements of the music from that game. My favorite track, Heat Wave even has some chiptunes in there sandwiched between the heavy drum beats.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 023: FAST Racing NEO

It wasn't F-ZERO but FAST Racing Neo and the follow up game, FAST RMX did a nice job filling the giant sized hole Nintendo continues to let exist by leaving the series sidelined. Not only is FAST Racing NEO, well, fast, but it has a soundtrack that wouldn't feel out of place at a rave or a club.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 022: Hyper Zone

This rail shooter was an early SNES title. The game showed off impressive visuals and some sweet SNES mode-7 effects, one of the most highly talked about features for Nintendo's 16-bit baby. Not only was Hyper Zone developed by HAL Laboratories, the soundtrack was scored by none other than Jun Ishikawa, a man that wrote many of the Kirby series' iconic jams. So if you get a distinct Kirby vibe from listening to Hyper Zone, that's why.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 021: Super Mario 64

Another Super Mario soundtrack but not the game you might have anticipated. All in due time, we will get to that game. Super Mario 64 was the last Super Mario title that Koji Kondo composed music for solo. The man gave us the incredibly catchy Main Theme from the game that can also be heard in arranged form as Slider and Snow Mountain and new takes on old classics like the tried and true Ground Theme (Title Theme in this game) and Underground Theme (Hazy Maze Cave). And who could forget the soothing sounds of Water or Dire Dire Docks as some fans know the tune as? That is hands down one of the greatest pieces of aquatic game music ever.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 020: Ridge Racer Revolution

Also known as RIIIIIIIDGE RACEEEEEEER 2 in Japan. Revolution's music contains a few remixes of tracks from the original game but most of the soundtrack is comprised of new material. There are a ton of high energy tracks here. Maximum Zone, a big favorite of mine sounds like something you'd hear at a club and after all these years, I'm still not sure what Dat Dan Day was going for. I'd hope to see tracks like Drive U 2 Dancing and Over the Highway in Pac-Man's song selection for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but I guess some things just aren't meant to be.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 019: Night Striker

Been a while since we had a ZUNTATA soundtrack. This is from another game I have never played but have heard the soundtrack sooo many times that I want to play it. With ARCADE ARCHIVES being all the rage, I'm hoping Taito gives HAMSTER the go ahead and Night Striker can get re-released. Anyhoo, Night Striker's music, as if you hadn't guessed by the cover above, is very cyberpunk/futuristic and with the ZUNTATA Midas touch, it sounds otherworldly. If you are not head bopping when Urban Trail starts playing, something is wrong with you.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 018: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen

Before FINAL FANTASY TACTICS, there was Ogre Battle on the SNES. If you enjoyed the soundtrack of TACTICS, odds are pretty good you'll enjoy this one. The two composers behind TACTICS, Masaharu Iwata and Hitoshi Sakimoto, wrote music for Ogre Battle along with Hayato Matsuo. March of the Black Queen has seen several re-releases and some have come with arranged soundtracks. Today, we're gonna listen to the original SNES audio. Fun fact: The game's title is a reference to the famous rock band, Queen.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 017: Double Dragon Neon Official Soundtrack

Double Dragon Neon lacks the more serious tone of the games that came before it but from my understanding (this another game I have not played), it did right by the series. Composer Jake "virt" Kaufman went all in on retro music, resulting in a soundtrack that sounds like it came straight out of 1987. Fans will definitely recognize the Double Dragon Theme as well as remixed music from the first two Double Dragon titles. There's a host of new music as well, with some super cheesy vocal numbers that you're sure to love.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 016: Axelay

These days, Konami is known for being the butt of countless jokes. It isn't as if the company's current reputation isn't deserved but back in the day, they were a much loved third party developer. Yeah, you could point to super obvious examples like the Metal Gear series but what about the one-off that was the SNES title, Axelay? This marvelous shoot 'em up had top down and side scrolling levels with a stellar visual audio presentation. This is an early SNES game (Axelay released in 1992) and it was already showing what the system was capable of. Every stage has it's own background theme as well as a boss track unique to that level, so outside of the stage clear jingle, you won't be hearing much in the way of repeated songs during gameplay. My favorite level them is Colony and my favorite boss theme is Bio-tech. This game SO needs another re-release.

How Black Bird Helped Me "Get" Fantasy Zone

OutRun, Super Hang-On, Virtua Racing; man, I sure do love me some old-school arcade SEGA classics. A plethora of gamers have a fondness for a lot of SEGA's earlier works. Whisper about any of the aforementioned titles and you're sure to get tales of how those games made someone's childhood. There was one much loved coin-op game I could never get into; Fantasy Zone, the brightly colored cute 'em up as these type of shooters are sometimes called.

I actually adore Opa-Opa's design and when I played Yakuza 0 three years ago, I spent far too much time on one of those crane games trying to get an Opa-Opa toy. Before that, Opa-Opa was one of my favorite characters to use in the first Sonic & SEGA All-Star Racing before SEGA foolishly decided that they didn't need characters other than those that were Sonic-related. So while I thought Opa-Opa was a cool character (space ship, thingy), I just couldn't for the life of me get into the game that he came from and I LOVE SHMUPs.

A couple of things about Fantasy Zone put me off. I tend to prefer my shooters to either be top down scrolling or scrolling to one side of the screen. Fantasy Zone lets the player scroll left and right freely whenever the player changes directions and that just felt so... unnatural to me. My unwillingness to try something different was definitely taking hold. And then there was the shop, with power-ups that were only temporary, requiring you to refill once they ran out or died. I also had no idea that you had to take out basses to trigger a boss fight and finish the stage. Yes, even in an age where information is a few clicks away, I never bothered to look deeper into Fantasy Zone to educate myself. I just thought Fantasy Zone was one of those games that was not for me.

Enter Black Bird. This game's very cool, dark visual style stuck out to me and after seeing a few videos of it in action, I decided to try it out for myself. It wasn't evident in gameplay videos but when I started playing, it hit me; Black Bird plays like Fantasy Zone. The left and right scrolling, the bases that you have to destroy to reach the boss. Black Bird doesn't have a shop and you get to hang onto your power-ups until you lose a life. The game also has a combo chain system, which is all kinds of fun to see how long you can keep going.

Playing Black Bird was a big "It all makes sense now!" moments for me, like a light bulb that appears above a cartoon character's head. All the things just seemed so foreign to me about Fantasy Zone seemed perfectly normal. It only took playing another game that was clearly inspired from it for my dumb brain to comprehend that.

When SEGA AGES Fantasy Zone released for the Switch, I was excited to pick it up thanks to my play time on Black Bird. I see Fantasy Zone in a whole new light. I know to destroy the bases, I manage my limited power-ups better and for the first time ever, I "get" Fantasy Zone! Finally, I see why the game is loved so much. I haven't beaten it yet (got to the fourth world and set some new high scores) but I intend to and I plan to play Super Fantasy Zone on my SEGA Genesis Mini and Fantasy Zone II on my 3DS via SEGA 3D Classics Collection.

So is Fantasy Zone a new SEGA favorite for me? Hmm, yeah I think so. Oh and while Fantasy Zone and Black Bird are indeed similar games, the tone could not be anymore different. Fantasy Zone is bright and colorful with plenty of upbeat, catchy tunes. Black Bird is dark and grim. The titular character you play as was a little girl that was killed and came back as said bird and wreaks havoc on everything around her. Yyyyyyyuup.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 015: NiGHTS into dreams...

You know, if SEGA were smart, they would make NiGHTS into dreams... (yes, I will always spell it like that every time I write some or all of the full title) part of the Switch SEGA AGES lineup, but that's a topic for another day. As cliche as it might sound, this soundtrack truly is dreamy. Paternal Horn, Message from Nightopia, Dreams Dreams, NiGHTS' soundtrack is (corny to say, but true) magical and this is coming from a guy that heard the soundtrack first, fell in love with it and then played the game. Doing this short write up makes me wanna give this another listen and I probably will. Not like I'm super busy these days.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 014: Super Hang-On 20th Anniversary Collection

I was watching Slopes Game Room's Super Hang-On: The Complete History two days ago as of the time I'm writing this. (These VG Soundtrack of the Day posts are done in advance). Super Hang-On was planned to be a featured here eventually but watching that excellent, informative video, I felt that the time to give this game's marvelous soundtrack it's due is now.

You're against the clock and while you don't have branching paths like OutRun, you do get to select from four different race classes, Beginner, Junior, Expert and Senior. Beginner is the easiest with 6 stages while Senior is the toughest with 18 stages. Once you get over 280 KM, you can activate your turbo for some serious speed that, thanks to SEGA's super scaler technology, is still impressive even in the year 2020 (or whatever year you happen to be reading this). Also like OutRun, Super Hang-On's songs have quite the run time. Each track comes in at about two minutes before looping back around and you get to choose from one of four before you begin. The most famous is Outride a Crisis but Sprint, Hard Road, Winning Run are all outstanding tunes.

Super Hang-On's music is great all by itself but for a more comprehensive listening experience, you gotta hear the Super Hang-On 20h Anniversary Collection. It includes the soundtrack to Hang-On, Super Hang-On and superb arrangements for select tracks of both games. If this is your first time listening to Super Hang-On's music, I feel kinda jealous. I would love to hear this stuff for the first time all over again.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 013: FINAL FANTASY VII

With FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE (officially) releasing today, this is the perfect time to feature the original game's music in VG Soundtrack of the Day. FINAL FANTASY VII's soundtrack is good. Really good. There are a ton of songs I like such as Let the Battles Begin!, Hurry! Turks Theme and the absolutely beautiful Main Theme. It isn't my favorite FF soundtrack but I fine effort, nonetheless. It'll be interesting to see how more songs in FFVII REMAKE turn out compared to these original tracks.

"Sonic 2? Maaaaan, I LOVE that game and the music really slaps!" Sorry, Virginia, that ain't the Sonic 2 we're talking about. Sonic 2 on the Game Gear/Master System totally was a thing and while the game had it's share of problems, the soundtrack was a bop. A few themes would get used in Sonic CD. Industrial. We Will Stop Them. C&C Thang. The mere mention of those tracks is enough to make a Command & Conquer fan swoon. I never played much of Command & Conquer but the music, ohhhh, the music has always been something that has stayed with me. I could probably rank my five favorite tracks from this score, but this entire soundtrack is fire. VG Soundtrack of the Day 010: OutRun Original Soundtrack

Yesterday's soundtrack was pretty beefy, so I thought we'd go with something that isn't so long winded. When it released some 30 years ago, OutRun was a very unique beast. It wasn't so much a racing game, rather it was a driving game with your only real opponent being the clock. The game features a total of 15 stages but you can only play through five of them on any run. After each stage, you'll come to a fork in the road and this is one of the things that separated OutRun from so many other racing/driving games at the time. Players loved OutRun's no liner approach as well as the incredible Latin inspired soundtrack. Before starting a run, player could choose between three songs, all of which offer a sublime listening experience, though many say Magical Sound Shower is the best OutRun tune (it's really Splash Wave). Over the years, OutRun's soundtrack has been expanded upon from the initial 3 songs for driving. The soundtrack I've selected for today's listening is the 2014 release, OutRun Original Soundtrack, which was originally divided into 3 releases but is available on Spotify as one album. It contains the original 1986 arcade music, two new tracks form the Nintendo 3DS version of OutRun and the excellent music from Turbo OutRun.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 009: Super Mario Odyssey

Our first Super Mario soundtrack. No, it isn't from the game that everyone knows the music to. We'll get to that one eventually, don't worry. Mario's most recent 3D adventure saw him traveling all over the world and to the moon to stop the (forced) wedding of Bowser and Princess Peach. Such a grand adventure deserves a grand soundtrack and the music of Super Mario Odyssey did not disappoint. Rock, jazz, feudal Japan, there's a ton of variety in Odyssey's soundtrack. The soundtrack is just about as packed as the game with well over 100 tracks.

One of the most loved (and addicting) indie games, Stardew Valley can be played on all current gaming platforms. Given the portablity of the Switch, this makes the game an easy sell for that system. I've yet to play Stardew Valley but I was curious about the soundtrack so I gave it a listen a year or so ago. If you're looking for a laid back, relaxing score, Stardew Valley has you covered. Given the current state the world is in, we could all use some more music to help us mellow out.

Memories #28: Extra Innings

I was never really big into sports titles. I think this was because I wasn't really into sports growing up despite always looking forward to gym class (the one class where you don't hold a pencil with a paper in front you). There were exceptions, though. I really enjoyed Double Dribble on the NES and later on, NBA Jam was a basketball game I could not get enough of. As time went on, I found out those were arcade style sports games and not simulators, hence why I gravitated to them and was probably why I liked Extra Innings as a tyke.

During one of my family's many trips to Blockbuster Video (RIP), we rented some SNES games. I believe we rented two games, one of them being Extra Innings and I'm pretty sure that was my dad's pick. The SNES cart was decorated with a realistic looking baseball player swinging his bat. With that image firmly in my mind (back in those days, we could see the SNES cart while the game was playing), I thought we would be in for some sort of hyper realistic baseball experience. I was still willing to give the game a go in spite of this.

Booting up Extra Innings completely shattered any thoughts of playing realistic baseball the video game. It had a title drop (which was probably the first time I ever heard one in a game) and displayed with the title were two cheerleaders and a baseball player, all three of which looked very cartoonish. Ah, a classic case of covers always lie. Not that I felt betrayed or anything. That just made getting into the game that much easier.

Everything about Extra Innings had a cute look to it. The field view after you hit a ball, the menu screen and it was all so inviting to a player like me who always felt intimidated by real world sports. Music was very jovial and got stuck in my head. To this day, I can still recall most if not all of the music. Two of my favorite scenes involved players at bat. When you scored a home run, the player would run to home with the peace sign up while the cheerleaders cheered. When you were struck out at bat, your player would take the bat and snap it in two over their leg and as a kid, that never failed to make me laugh.

When I was 15, I picked up a used copy of Extra Innings. I still have the game to this day. Now a days, I can see it a slow, bare bones arcade style baseball game. That said, I'm still happy that my dad rented this game all those years ago. In spite of it being sluggish and lacking in features compared to other titles in the genre, I can still have some fun with it.

VG Soundtrack of the Day 004: Darius II

ZUNTATA. That is a name I want you new readers/listeners to get used to hearing. ZUNTATA is the name of Taito's in house music division. Decades ago, it was quite common for game soundtracks to release with the composers credited as a single band name. Capcom had Alfy Lyra, Konami went under Konami Kukiha Club and Taito used ZUNTATA. These days, game soundtracks seldom release with a band name as a composer credit. Perhaps it was due to the out of this world compositions of ZUNTATA music, but the name ZUNTATA has endured and is still used on Taito soundtracks even if only one individual worked on writing the score for a game. That leads us to today's soundtrack, Darius II, scored by Hisayoshi Ogura. Despite releasing in 1989, the music of Darius II is phenomenal and just might be my favorite Darius soundtrack. Considering the outstanding efforts of Darius Gaiden and G. Darius, that is no small feat.
